I need to decide on lettering for my film posters so have
decided to do some research, make notes and examples on different types of
fonts and typography. Two good books I found when looking through my dad’s
collection were two by Patricia Carter on calligraphy and lettering. They
contain some really beautiful designs and examples so I got side-tracked and
spent a lot more time than I had planned on this.
In regard to artists I looked in particular at Osvaldo
Venturi as his work is particularly based on illustrations for movie posters. I
completed one of his drawings for my critical studies but did not like the
typeface so this is why I feel it is important for me to research this. During
this week I have created a mood board on typography and did various experiments
with the draft layout design for my first poster. This has helped me realise
how it important it is to research and experiment with some details. I don’t want to do a lot of work in my
drawings for it to be spoiled by something as simple as the title not being the
right size.
On Tuesday I continued my artists research and made notes
for my annotations but took too long so had to continue on Wednesday. On
Thursday and Friday, I completed work in my sketchbook and used some of my
photos from my visit to the Royal Armouries as primary research and
observational drawings.
I enjoyed this as I could pick and choose and see where some
of my ideas could go.
On Saturday I watched Merlin and planned (themes,
characters). On Sunday I had a long day and completed drawings and annotations
for my three chosen artists and critical studies. I also planned the layout of
my research sheets.
