Week 1: 5th February 2016

I was given my brief for my Final Major Piece (FMP) which was exciting but stressful.

Kat told the class ‘choose what you want but make sure you can take it outside the box, go far with it and be able to find primary research.’

I found this exciting as in my Year 1 FMP I would have total control and choice. The stressful bit was choosing something that would fit all what Kat had said, but also make an impact as this would be my final piece of work and would also affect my university choice.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I did a lot of talking to my family and friends. My dad told me to pick something I had liked for a long time and which I could relate to. My mum suggested I looked through some books for some ideas. I ended up doing a mind map.

By Wednesday I had some ideas but knew I needed to narrow it down to at least 2-3 main ones which I could then discuss with my tutors on Friday.

I had an idea about myths and legends but Greek mythology got added in somehow in the discussion on Friday so I was left feeling confused. I knew that over the weekend I needed to do some more research and then make a list of questions for my tutors on Monday.

The first list was long and was about what I did not want to do. This included Ancient Greeks and Roman myths and legends, modern day myths, myths from different cultures.

The second list was shorter and was basically Celtic Myths, King Arthur and Robin Hood. Out of this I kept going back to Welsh/Arthurian Legends which is something I know well and adore. Whilst looking at this and how to take it forward I kept thinking about certain tales within the story such as Lancelot and Guinevere, the Lady of the Lake and how everyone Arthur holds dear betrays him.

I made notes of this and possible ways of how to take it forward so I could discuss this with my tutors in college. I discussed my ideas with my tutors who were worried about primary research and how I could carry my ideas forward. My tutors gave me a big book on mythology to look through but it was too wide an area and I kept going back to Arthur and Merlin.
