Costing and Budgeting.

An important part of this project and the first time I have had to consider it is working to a set budget.

We were given £200 to work with depending on what we had chosen – I have chosen the library wall and the two display boards.

I have realised in my research on costings and sticking to a budget I need to be realistic and think about little things such as paint brushes, preparation materials and time constraints.

I had to split the budgets between 3100 for the wall and £100 for the boards but I think I would be better trying to spend less on the display boards and more on the wall.

I did some draft templates I can use dependant on which board ideas are selected.

I looked at some of the popular art websites and decided if I bought brand new I would blow my budget before I had even started drawing the basics.

What I decided is there are some areas I need to consider:

What have I already got? (brushes, cleaning material, could the school let me use any of their materials?).

What could I recycle. An example would be recycling scraps of card and tissue paper or a board such as the hungry caterpillar.

Where could I buy material/art equipment cheaply?

This would be looking at Auction sites such as eBay and perhaps looking in charity shops. Another option would be recycling or asking market stall and material shops for end pieces of material etc.

This can only be planned when I know which project I am working on and then I can see what material I want and where I can source it from for as cheap as possible.

Unit 2: Shawlands Primary School Reading for Fun Project Evaluation.

I have mixed feelings about this project and this has made look at how I would approach this type of project in the future.

The brief was a competition to design either something for a sensory room or the library. I chose the library which consisted of a wall and two display boards and the brief was to encourage reading for fun.

We were given a talk by the staff from the school plus a power point. We were told the budget and constraints and the money came from parents fundraising.

I feel that the project was to show us a look at real life working and also how to be professional. However, I feel that the school were not exactly helpful in some cases. It took them ages to even provide dimensions of the boards and wall and how they can expect you to plan and budget without this key piece of information makes me wonder. It also has made me realise that if you take on project work like this you need lots of key information before you even do research, in other words basic planning.

I feel that if I would have had this information before I would have been able to plan better and more effectively.

I also did not like how the budget was split as it to me the wall will be more expensive than the two display boards. I think this should have been part of the project and would have been more useful for me to decide and to split the budget and show why.

I did some rough costings and looked at Viking Direct, Art and Craft websites and decided that I would be better trying to recycle and looking on eBay.

I enjoyed looking at the books and I think this as the best part of the project as you have to look at more than what appeals to you. Questions I had to ask include, will it appeal to both boys and girls? What about the ages? Is it popular or classic?

An example of popular is that at the moment Frozen is popular with young girls, when I was age 8 it was Arial from Little Mermaid, when my mum was young it was Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

I decided to go for classic as if the school was on a tight budget then hopefully what I chose would have lasting appeal. I think it would have been better if the school had provided a book list with a small selection as I found it a vast area tor research and I think this took time away from actual planning and drawing.

I enjoyed doing the research and drawings on books which appealed to me and I found that in real life I am also going to have to do work that does not appeal to me but I am going to have to be consistent in my approach to all projects, particularly if I want to make a living in this area of work.

I have enjoyed some aspects of this project particularly in doing favourite books and characters. I have enjoyed doing the camp scene as it gives me free rein in my creativity but I do not think the school has been helpful. I found it unfair that the school phoned up after three weeks in the project to say that Adventure Time was not suitable. In real life if I had been working on this and they had not given me clear instructions this would me I would have had to scrap all this work. It also means that I would have been rushed to finish this on time and it may make me late starting other projects, which may think clients think I am unreliable or lazy.

I think I have produced some good pieces of work but what has let me down again is planning and then focusing on small targets.

I have enjoyed most of the work but if this had been a real work project I would get the school to give me more clear information about what they do/don’t want and key information such as measurements.

Week 9/10 (01-08/02/16) Shawlands.

I have concentrated on finishing my two board for Keystage 2 as the needed finishing touches. I have decided to only do two and they Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Katie Morag. I keep going back to these two as I think they are timeless and will always appeal to children and adults alike. I have put a lot of work into these and I think it will be close in which one I would pick.

I have started on my camp scene and it has taken a lot of planning in the composition and which characters to pick as I have to be aware of the budget. I have enjoyed some parts of this project but others I have disliked.

Week 8/9 (18-31/01/2016) Shawlands.

I have concentrated on my boards for the display boards. For Keystage 1 I have already completed the Hungry Caterpillar so I have done The Gruffalo (which I am very pleased with). I have also down the Owl Babies and have tried to make it sensory with use of other material but I found this distracted me and I could not concentrate on it. I have also started to do sketches and plans in my sketch book.

Week 6/7 (04-17/01/2016) Shawlands

I have looked at different ideas for the wall this week and I have also discussed colour harmony/theory with my dad this week. I have looked at examples of display boards and I took some photos at the library and at the children’s section when I went to hospital for some ideas. I have completed a space scene and decided this will appeal only to boys. I was watching Scooby Doo and Camp Scare and got the idea of a camp scene for the wall and what it can include. It has to have a tent and camp fire but what else can I have? I have started to plan which characters will look best/fit in around a camp and what will they be doing? An obvious one is reading and having fun!

Week 5 (28/12/2016) Shawlands.

I have started to develop my boards and I have completed the Hungry Caterpillar in planning stages and in my sketchbook I have started to do some examples of Artist Studies/Illustrators’ and I have decided on Quentin Blake (Roald Dahl Illustrator), Nick Sharrett (Illustrator of Jacqueline Wilson books such as Tracy Beaker) and Author/Illustrator of Katie Morag Mairi Hedderwick. I am particularly interested in Katie Morag/Mairi Hedderwick as I want to write and illustrate children’s book as my career choice (I have always been a big fan of Jane Hissey of ‘Old Bear’ Series).

I have also bought some old children’s books and magazines from charity shops to look through and make notes, get some idea from.
I have started to put drawings in my sketch book and plan layouts of the display boards.

Week 4 (21/12/2016) Shawlands

I had narrowed my choices down and one book I will definitely do is the Hungry Caterpillar. I loved this book when I was little and I can see why it still appeals now to children and more importantly, it appeals to both boys and girls.

I looked at teaching websites with my mum this week such as TES and I also looked at Pinterest.

I looked at different sample of material I could use to make it more interesting such as tissue paper and coloured card.

I think this will be my first choice for Keystage 1 although I am looking at other books and characters.

I am looking at books for girls/boys and books that appeal to both.

Week 3 (14/12/2015) Shawlands

In my research I looked at World Book Day 2014 and I remembered how we use to go into school dressed as our favourite character from a book.

I looked at some of the ideas on how WBD website gave ideas for fun games and interactive display boards.

I looked at good boards/bad boards and tried to see why I liked some and not others.

One thing I could see that I have to aim for something that will appeal to both boys and girls.

Week 2 (07/12/15) Shawlands

I have looked at different websites including the six book challenge and BBC Bitesize reading for pleasure to see what books are recommended for Keystage 1 and 2. I found some books I can remember such ‘We are all going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘Katie Morag’ and some new ones I had never heard off. I talked to my mum and she can remember reading some of the books with my brother and I. On the older key stage, she can remember some books such ‘Stig of the Dump’.

It seems that I am some books are popular and some are classic so I need to think about what will last on the display boards/wall but still have appeal. I think going for books which are both classic and popular will be best for me.

I also did two customer boards and I found doing the one about a girl easier because I looked at things that are popular with my cousin and my neighbour who is age 9.

I did a board full of characters also which included the Gruffalo and Roald Dahl characters.

I found this bit fun as I could look at different examples and put in some which appealed to me and some that were popular.

Shawland's Primary School; Brief Delivery

Week 1 (01/12/15)

This unit is about working towards a real life project for a s school (Shawlands Primary).

This latest project is to create a set of ideas and work to present to Shawlands Primary School as they are looking for ideas and help with changes in their library, sensory rom and two display boards. This project is a competition and the idea that the school likes best wins and is used. Two teachers from Shawlands delivered a Power Point showcasing and explaining their needs and constraints for this project. They give us a presentation and it told us what they want for a budget or £200.

There are two choices and one is a sensory room for autistic children. They don’t want to overstimulate the children but get them to focus.

The other choice is in the library and it is to cover one wall (painted blue now) and 2 display boards. They want the boards to be for Keystage 1 and 2 and the wall to show that reading is for fun. They gave us a power point and I felt that it was not clear in details I thought would be important. I made notes and did some research at home on books, I looked at examples of display boards and autistic sensory rooms.

I decided that Autism was not something I felt comfortable with and did not know enough about so I decided to choose the library wall and 2 display boards.

I made notes in my notebook to help me in my research and started looking for ideas.

I also had to think about budgets and how could I do something really good but be able to keep from over spending.

I concentrated on primary and secondary research so I could complete my customer boards.
