Cardboard City, Week Two

This week we went down to the Drama Theatre in order to have more space than the classroom, because after we'd gotten into groups, we were told to build our own Cardboard City. We could make it as big or small and as complicated or simple as we wanted, and we had a huge stack of cardboard boxes to work with - there was just one rule: each groups Cardboard City had to somehow link up to the other groups' work. My group and I decided to use a deconstructed cardboard box and lay it down as a bridge that joined up with the other groups Carboard City. Throughout the construction of this, I filmed it all using a time lapse, below:

Later, we deconstructed the Cardboard City we'd built and I also filmed this process:

As a class, we constructed a pyramid out of cardboard boxes. Bigger boxes were used for the base, and the higher the pyramid was built, smaller and less boxes were used to create a triangular shape. A time lapse of the pyramid's construction is here:

We then constructed a circular wall of cardboard boxes, as a class, with gaps and small spaces left in random places throughout, as viewing windows, and a space left at the front as a door. After bilding this, we sat in silence in the dark, in an attempt to get an idea and feeling of what was about to happen. In my opinion, it was calming, but also added an edge of uncertainty, because I had no idea of what our version of Shadows would look like.

Inside the wall of boxes, everyone's iron sculptures were hung upon a small circular set up in the centre of the floor. At first, it didn't look like much, but then all the main lights in the room were turned off, smaller lights were placed under the circular set up, and the room and space inside the wall of boxes suddenly became very eerie and atmospheric. Everyone's iron sculptures were casting shadows across the room, and it was very creepy but inspiring.

Here is a video of the shadows:
